Week 3: Actors And Characters

Ellie Linton, Homer Yannos, Fiona Maxwell, Lee, Robyn Mathers, Corrie Mackenzie and  Chris Lang are the main characters in Tomorrow When The War Began. The actors that take upon these characters role in the movies are; Deniz Akdeniz, as Homer Yannos. Reptile, troublemaker, problem, slob, loud mouth, wild, crazy, immature; Homer Yannos is all of those things. He is also; a leader, a thinker, a planner as well as careful, innovative, caring, supportive, and brave.💠 Phoebe Tonkin plays the character of Fi Maxwell. She is set up to fail in the environment the group finds itself in. She is unassertive, pampered, with no real knowledge of camping or the bush. She is someone who has never done a day's hard work in a her life and even she knows it. Even she doubts she has what it takes to resist, to survive. Chris Pang plays the role of Lee Takkam. He is Solid, dependable, loving, passionate, considerate, caring, listening, thinking, mature, indifferent, withdrawn, introverted, aggressive, vicious, murderous, psychopathic. Lee is one of the most interesting characters in the “Tomorrow” series in my opinion. Ashleigh Cumming plays the role of Robyn Mathers. John Marsden dedicated the book to his older sister Robyn, the Robyn that we know from the story is based on her. John Marsden says that he bases 10% of his characters on real people. Robyn is a brave, noble character that would go to any extent to save her friends. Rachel Hurd-Wood plays the role of Corrie Mackenzie. Corrie is Ellie's very best friend, her mate, whom she had done everything with since she was a toddler and who she plans on doing everything with when they leave school. Corrie is a plump faced redhead girl, very close to Ellie's age, who used to severely lacked in confidence. She had advanced in leaps and bounds since Kevin had become her boyfriend. Corrie's determination also should not be under-estimated. When battling to find a way into Hell, Corrie had been one of the leaders:
"Finally Corrie said, 'There might be a chance if we wriggle through here. We might be able to get around the side somewhere.' Andrew Ryan plays the role of Chris Lang. I found a quote in the first book that I thought suited his character and describes him well: Chris was a lightly built boy with intense eyes and a lot of nervous habits, like coughing in the middle of every sentence. He wouldn't be into Commem Day or woodchopping competitions; he was more into the Grateful Dead, Hieronymus Bosch, and computers. He was also known for writing poetry and using more illegal substances than you'd find in the average police laboratory. His motto was 'If it grows, smoke it'. Ninety percent of the school thought he was weird, ten percent thought he was a legend, everybody thought he was a genius" ("Tomorrow, When the War Began", Ch 11, p154). Caitlin Stasey plays the role of Ellie Linton. Ellie is a trustworthy, independent, girl that likes adventure. Although she might get fired up she always comes back to her senses. The last character that I have chosen to write about is Lincoln Lewis who plays Kevin Holmes. Kevin has a hard time with the group, especially with Ellie. Ellie had always admired him for being so loyal to Corrie and for taking her to the hospital, forgetting about the possible consequences, but  he rarely receives credit from her or the rest of the group. Kevin can be scared and sometimes appears as a coward but he’s loyal to his friends and would never leave them behind.

Week 2; setting and places!

The settings in this book are based on real places. Hell is a reasonably accurate description of Terrible Hollow, in the Australian alps, near Mt Howitt in Victoria. The devils staircase; small cliffs, like steps descends in to the hollow. Tailors stitch is the crosscut saw, which is a long ridge of rock that runs for miles from Mt Howitt to Mt Specultion, through Big hill and Mt buggary. It gives great views into terrible hollow. I have asked my self if the 'hermit' was an actual person. Well yes, it is accepted by locals that a hermit did live in and around Mt Howitt and the Terrible Hollow for many years. In the late 1970's there were eye witness sightings. Scott Vickers-Willis, a hiker in 1986, found a carved handmade walking stick concealed in a bush on the edge of the Terrible Hollow. This stick lends startling support to the hermit theory. Other locations used include china walls, a rugged mountainous area on private farmland near Khancoban in NSW, and the long wooden bridge across the Murrumbidgee river at Gundagai in NSW. I guess that the setting could be found in any Australian state.

Question 2:part of week 1. WHAT IS THE CONFLICT IN THE BOOK

In the book tomorrow when the war began the conflict caused is obviously being invaded. The characters or readers if the book do not know if it is a country invasion or a just the town. They assume that us it the country though.  We do not know why there has been an invasion or the reason for this conflict to be caused. Other than war conflict there is character conflict to; such as the snake incident, which caused some argument and when Ellie lashed out in Lee for dozing off when he was meant to be on watch. All through out the book there is conflict being made, wether it's small or big.

Week 2; who has developed the most as a character so far.

I think that Fi has experienced and is yet to experience the greatest change. At the start of the book when they arrive in hell Fi doesn't even know what two minute noodles are! She also realised that make up, and various out fits will not be needed. During the book she becomes braver; she even asks Ellie if she can smash the window whilst they are in the truck, she fails but explains that she has always wanted to do that. Not only has she changed physically but emotionally to.At the start of the book homer develops a love for Fi, Fi doesn't notice this until a week into the trip. Once it was time to leave hell and the group went down to the creek for a last swim, Ellie notices that Fi starts acting a bit self conscious, she also develops a love for homer.

Week1, question1: When was Tomorrow When The War Began set?

John Marsden has set Tomorrow when the war began in the 90's. The first book was sold in 1993. After some research about what others have thought about the book being set in this time, I have come to a conclusion that many people have thought it to be refreshing, and interesting; to read about teenage lives without the technology that we are used to now. Technology is such a huge part of our lives now that it was an interesting and exciting read, to go back to a time, which wasn't that long ago anyway, where we did not have instant access to information.
